CANCÚN, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico

Located on the Eastern end of the Yucatan Peninsula, Cancun is one of the most beautiful locations in the Caribbean.

The area was inhabited by the Mayans as an important fishing route. Many of the religious and sacred Mayan archeological sites are located around Cancun: Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba and Pole.

Between beach volleyball, beach soccer, water sports, sandcastle building and sunbathing it was unbelievable experience to walk on the white powdery sand, dip in the multiple shades of the turquoise waters of the Caribbean and adore the deep blue skies.

DAY TRIPS FROM CANCÚN

DAY 1: XCARET ECO-PARK

We visited XCaret, an eco-park which sits on top of the ancient Pole site with many underground rivers and limestone sink holes along archeological ruins. One of the rivers that passes through the park can be floated on, surrounded by lush vegetation and mangroves.

DAY 2: SAIL TO ISLA MUJERES & ISLA CONTOY

We took an hour sail on a small boat to Isla Mujeres, another important fishing and trading post in the Mayan Civilization.

Short sail from Isla Mujeres we make a stop at Isla Contoy, a protected ecological preserve and important bird nesting island. The island has only one resident, a biologist monitoring the bird migration, colonies and nesting. Isla Contoy astonishes us with its unspoiled beauty.

DAY 3: CHICHEN ITZA STEP PYRAMID

Chichen Itza, with its massive step pyramid, the temple of the feathered serpent Kukulcan, was built around 600 AD between two large limestone holes (cenotes) which provided water all year round.

The city spanned over two miles (5 km) and its pyramid was an important place for pilgrimage and religious ceremonies in hope for better harvests and prosperity.

It was interesting to discover how stone balls were used in the Great Ball Court between two teams.
